A tax refund isn’t a ‘gift’ from the government—it’s your own money being returned to you. In 2026, the goal is to make sure you aren’t leaving a single cent of those refundable credits on the table.

2026 Tax Changes “The Big Beautiful Bill”
Q: Do I still need to file a tax return if my income is below $20,000?
A: You are generally not required to file if your gross income is below the standard deduction ($20,000 for singles). However, you should still file if you had taxes withheld from your paycheck or if you qualify for refundable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Child Tax Credit, as this is the only way to receive that money back as a refund
Under the "One Big Beautiful Bill," the maximum credit has increased to $2,200 per child under age 17. Up to $1,700 of this credit is "refundable," meaning you can receive it as part of your refund even if you owe $0 in taxes
Yes! The student loan interest deduction is an "above-the-line" adjustment, meaning you can deduct up to $2,500 in interest even if you take the $20,000 standard deduction. Note that this benefit begins to phase out if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $85,000 for single filers.
Yes, 2026 introduces major new breaks: tipped workers can now deduct up to $25,000 in qualified tips, and many employees can deduct up to $12,500 in qualified overtime pay. These are massive shifts that can significantly lower the tax burden for hourly and service-industry workers.
Yes! Starting in 2026, you can claim a new "above-the-line" deduction for cash gifts to qualified public charities. This means you can subtract up to $1,000 (or $2,000 for married couples) directly from your taxable income in addition to your standard deduction, providing a tax benefit for your generosity without the need to itemize.
For tax years 2025 through 2028, taxpayers aged 65 and older are eligible for an additional $6,000 bonus deduction per person. This is separate from the regular age-based standard deduction and can be claimed even if you itemize. This bonus begins to phase out if your modified adjusted gross income exceeds $75,000 for individuals or $150,000 for joint filers.
